On September 9th the AEM Manufacturing Express pulled into Conn-Weld’s front parking lot!
Like a well-oiled machine, within minutes tents were set up and interactive stations ready for Conn-Weld employees to engage. Employees from all departments joined the celebration while enjoying a lunch paying homage to WV heritage of pepperoni rolls.
Conn-Weld was excited to invite several community members to help observe our people. Representatives, leaders, and students from Bluefield State University, Mercer County Technical Education Center, and West Virginia Industrial Extension participated. In addition, Bill Bissett of West Virginia Manufacturing Association, and West Virginia State Auditor, JB McCuskey joined President Marvin Woodie in offering remarks.
However, the day was about the people who make it all happen. Representing Conn-Weld in a documentary series produced by AEM was mother/daughter team Patty Akers, Director of Human Resources and Shipping Supervisor, Marie Collins. Together Patty (2007) and Marie (2010) have a combined 31 years of service at Conn-Weld. When asked what it’s like working with your mom, Marie stated, “I always heard it was a great place to work. Having mom here makes it all the better. It truly is family!”
Fabrication Supervisor, Noland Woodring whose son Marcus worked as an engineering intern over the summer, spoke about his 23-year tenure with Conn-Weld. What a testament to the hardworking people behind our product!
As a member of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), Conn-Weld is a participant in the grassroots campaign, I Make America, that brings attention to how manufacturers contribute to the economy both on a national and local level. During this critical election year, it is more important than ever for those in office to support the initiatives that drive our industry forward. This is so important for Southern West Virginia as we face several challenges such as the highest average health care costs in the nation. Not to mention, an inventory tax that penalizes manufacturers like Conn-Weld who are in the business of maintaining a supply of materials in order to respond to customers across the US and around the world in a timely manner. Conn-Weld does not want state or federal funds, but a business environment that promotes our ability to compete globally around the world while manufacturing here in the great state of West Virginia.
It is issues like these that impact Conn-Weld’s ability to contribute to the Southern West Virginia’s economy where people can work, live, and raise a family.
